UCAS applications for England up 11.1% for 2008

The latest UCAS statistics published today (16 July 2008) show that the number of English students applying to full-time undergraduate courses at English universities and colleges has increased by 11.1%.(1)

Commenting on the figures, Sir Martin Harris, Director of OFFA, said:

“Once again, it is encouraging to see that the upward trend in university applications continues. It is particularly pleasing to see the continued increase in students classified in the lower socio-economic groups – up 0.7% from 24.2% to 24.9%.(2)

“These figures further indicate that students are not being deterred by the new fee and support system introduced in 2006. Universities and colleges successfully handed out almost £96 million in bursaries in the first year of the new system and we would urge all prospective students to find out what bursaries are available at their chosen place of study.”

1) This includes applicants who would previously have applied through NMAS, the admissions service for nursing and midwifery diploma courses.
2) This figure applies to English applicants aged 18 and under.
