David Malcolm is Deputy Chief Executive/Head of Policy and External Affairs at the Equality Challenge Unit, on a 12 month secondment from the National Union of Students (NUS), where he is Assistant Director. He oversees ECU’s policy and research programme, including its work on student equality and diversity issues and their impact on access, retention and success.

In his 12 years at NUS he has been closely involved on a number of projects looking at the student experience, and how different factors impact on access and success in higher education. This has included NUS’ Pound In Your Pocket research into student living costs, research into students living in the parental home during study and research on the experiences of students estranged from their parents. He is a co-author of the Student Support and Benefits Handbook, published by NUS and the Child Poverty Action Group. David sits on a number of committees in the higher education sector including the board of the Disabled Students’ Allowance Quality Assurance Group.
